Wins, Losses and Postponements!

Plenty of games this weekend across the club, Saturday had some horrendous weather, but the pitch was fine and the play lived up to it.

Ladies 2s had the first game of the day, away to a strong Knowle 2 side, they came out all guns blazing and put North off their game, possibly as we had been used to having most of the play in our previous games. We didn't really recover and Knowle managed to keep up their average goal tally of 8 per game. We did manage to get one back through Molly Wyatt, but this was merely a consolation and we had to concede that we lost to the better team. we will however come back strongly next week having lost the final 100% record in the club. Rachel Howarth was the player of the match.

Men's 1s were up next and the match report has been written by Steve Proctor:

North Somerset entertained Duchy HC at a rain soaked but well supported Gordano School on Saturday afternoon.
After last weeks monumental effort to take a point away from home the squad was boosted with the return of Dan Ball, George Preistner & Brad Krone, with coach MacBlain retaking his place in the dugout.
North started the game with the lions share of possession against the 10 men of Duchy and a number of slick passing moves saw early opportunities for the frontline carved out.
Duchy did make some rare attacks into North's territory but were kept in check by some resolute defending, the athletic Lee Chambers again putting his body on the line as is becoming the norm.
The scoring was opened with a well worked short corner routine with Scott Voisey firing a drag flick into the back of the net. 2 more goals were scored before half time to keep the home side on track for a home win.
After the break North continued to press hard and use their numerical advantage utilising rolling subs to keep everyone fresh, 3 well worked short corners were scored when the unselfish Darshane Theara put the ball to captain Lewis Francuz to slot home.
Duchy did score 2 late goals but these had no bearing on the result aside from spoiling the clean sheet requested by the coach.
A good afternoon with 3 points and 9 goals scored for North, Francuz 4, Voisey 2, Charlie Mott 1, Ball 1 & Priestner 1.
Hughes Carpentry Man of the match: Darshane Theara.

Next up were the Ladies 1's with a match report from Captain Hazel.

North Somerset started strongly, Frome did not know what had hit them. Rebecca Tedford scored an early goal which only gave North the confidence to go forth. North soon went two goals up through a goal hungry Michelle Harrold. North continued to play great team hockey from back to front and were rewarded with a third goal before half time by Wallis Jozefowicz who worked hard to overlap the forwards and make the opposition pay for their lacklustre defence.
We went into half time knowing that we could have been many more goals up. Coach Hoops in the absence of Ash had a few frank words, and with that North came out all guns blazing. Pressure from the forwards resulted in Frome having to use their feet on the goal line and we were rewarded with a penalty stroke which Luna converted. Frome's defence were stretched and another goal line save by a foot gave north another penalty flick despite the protestations of the Frome captain, Luna again converted past a statuesque keeper. With minutes to go, north continued to press with Charlotte Millington driving down the wing and player of the match Helen Graham overlapping to give North their final goal. A fantastic team effort and if we could mention all players we would. Bring on next week. We are a team that are ready to meet, greet and win.

The Men's 3s were up next at home and faced a Bridgwater B team having made the long journey up. Bridgwater were top of the league and we were aware of how variable our performances had been of late, so were wary of the league leaders. North had a decent warm up and initial team talk from Jon Venn as Captain Phil Toomey was umpiring the previous game. We started the game and were surprised to find ourselves putting all the pressure on the Bridgwater D in front of a number of the Men's 1s team who had come to see how the game should be played. Our pressure worked well and the front two of Colin Ainsworth and Steve Puttergill seemed to have the run of their defence as they couldn't follow the runs made and the midfield found them well. Bridgwater's keeper was in fine form, making about 5 saves within the first 15 minutes, including when Shaun Huxham rounded him and shot from a tight angle. Unfortunatley that was as good as it got, because the floodlights failed to work properly and the match had to be abandoned due to bad light. We will be looking forward to the replay more than we were for this fixture.

Last game of the day was the Men's 2s and the match report comes from Harry Croker.
North Somerset Men’s 2’s were away in a late push back of 16:30 against Firebrands C, but played in Clevedon.
With Sam Dangerfield returning to the pitch for North Somerset and Harry Croker back from heading a hockey ball 2 weeks ago, we saw a couple of changes made again to the North team along with a last minute change at the back bringing in Jon Bennett.
North had good possession in the first half creating some good chances down the wings but unfortunately couldn’t finish them off. Brands caught North on the break a couple of times snatching 2 goals before half time.
After a strong team talk during the break North came out with a different mind set, as they have done the past few weeks with a dominating presence. Rob O’Neill showed his athleticism with some cracking saves in the second half to keep North in the game. 10 minutes into the half North decided to change to a 3-4-3 formation which paid off as Adam Howard managed to squeeze the ball past the keeper bringing North back to 2-1.
Shortly afterwards Adam was shown a yellow card after coming together with a Firebrands player who received a green for his Tom Daley impression sending both men to the sideline.
North continued to create chances in the second half with Tom Broome and Toby Cox pulling the strings, but again were caught on the break as Brands pinched a 3rd. This didn’t stop North working hard and linking up some great passes but again couldn’t seal it when getting into the D.
Brands sealed their win snatching a 4th with about 5 minutes to go leaving the final score as Firebrands 4-1 North Somerset
Man Of The Match went to Toby Cox.

Sunday 11th was the turn for the Juniors with another festival at Yate for the U12s. As usual the team was rotated and featured Josh A, Josh L, Harry, Alec, Charlie, Neve, Meghan, Molly and Annabella. After the brilliant performance in the previous festival the hosts had decided we deserved harder opposition this time round and we found it tough going, struggling to get to the pace of play quickly enough, but we featured some great passing around the team with goals for both Josh's and shots from all of the attacking players. Full junior write up in other news item.

Also on Sunday the Men's 1s should have played their first cup game against Taunton Civil Service, but we had won that 5-0 by them conceding earlier in the week.
