Ladies 2nds clinch promotion
North Somerset Ladies 2nds clinched promotion in second place of Brunel Division 3 with one game to spare on Sunday with a resounding 6-0 win away at Redland. The day earlier they had lost 4-1 against unbeaten league leaders Knowle 2nds, in a game where they had not played that well.
However, Redland suffered the backlash as North played their best hockey of the season. It seemed as though every player in the match day squad produced their best individual performance in this game, and the team work and passing all round the pitch was too much for Redland to deal with.
The North central midfield of Clare Sheffield, captain Michelle Overbury and Sami Pengelly dominated from the outset, giving plenty of opportunities for the wider midfield players and forwards to combine and put pressure on the Redland defence. The Redland keeper had an excellent game and the score would probably have reached double figures without her as she pulled off a string of saves throughout the game, one of the best when she tipped a fierce shot from Brooke Basset that was heading for the top left corner away from goal.
Molly Wyatt scored fairly early on following up a short corner shot and Sami Pengelly drove into the Redland D and fired a fierce shot home to make it 2-0. Whenever Redland did attack the North defence was more than a match with Jane Bennett controlling the centre of defence. Vice captain Jo Withers grabbed a third goal before half time to leave North comfortably in control at the break.
The second half was very much a repeat of the first in terms of play. North continued to move the ball well, pressurising Redland but finding their goalkeeper a formidable final barrier. North did score 3 more goals in the second half, with Milli Bryant finding the net and Jo Withers completing a well deserved hat trick – all the goals came from sustained pressure within the Redland D with the North forwards keeping their composure to slip the ball home from short range.
North will hope to finish their best ever season with a win in their final game away against Knowle 3 next Saturday.
