Winscome Ladies 5th Team 2 - North Somerset Ladies 2nd Team 5
North Somerset Ladies 2nds continued their strong season with a 5-2 away win at Winscombe. They started the stronger of the two teams and early pressure resulted in some short corners, but the young Winscombe keeper who had a fine game was equal to the challenges.
Winscombe then made a quick break and scored as the North defence were caught off balance. North were not playing quite as well as usual, and could not mount sustained pressure for a while as they were frequently conceding possession with misplaced passes. Both teams were contesting for the ball enthusiastically, but with stick tackles being penalised by both umpires the game lost a bit of its flow.
The North midfield gradually started to ramp up the pressure, and centre forward Joanne Withers led the front line well. Finally North scored from a short corner when a change in the routine led to Phoebe Gibson tapping in from a pass across the goal.
Almost straight away Winscombe scored their second, a run from midfield into space not being closed down and their player fired a shot past the North keeper. Phoebe Gibson then equalised with a good run of her own, bursting through from midfield and placing her shot well into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. To leave the score 2-2 at half time.
North made some tactical switches in their formation in the second half, and although they were almost caught out from a run direct from the push back, overall they controlled play much better in the second half, and the accuracy of passing also improved. Claire Sheffield and Phoebe Gibson were running the centre of midfield well now and the North defence were coping easily with the occasional Winscombe attack.
Centre forward Joanne Withers dropped a little deeper and received a lot of ball, and then brought wingers Milli Bryant and Brooke into play, and with more width in their attacking play North were looking much more threatening.
